The “Egypt Freed from Rabies 2030” program, launched by Egypt’s Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation beneath Minister Alaa Farouk, formally started its first discipline part on 6 Tuesday, January 2026. 

This system was inaugurated within the Ain Shams district of Cairo, the place veterinary groups began vaccinating and sterilizing stray canine as a part of the nationwide marketing campaign in opposition to rabies. 

Farouk has emphasised a shift from merely managing crises to addressing the basis causes of the issue by means of internationally acknowledged animal welfare requirements. 

Within the first part of this nationwide marketing campaign, veterinary groups achieved outstanding outcomes by vaccinating 293 free-roaming canine and transferring a further 25 for surgical sterilization. 

This “catch-neuter-vaccinate-release” method goals to cut back the stray inhabitants and make sure that handled animals are returned to their unique habitats, supporting ecological stability and stopping unvaccinated canine from re-entering these areas.

Furthermore, the  program intends to handle an estimated 10 to 11 million stray canine by means of a structured plan that entails the development of 12 shelters on the outskirts of main cities, together with Cairo, Giza, Beheira, and Gharbiya. 

These amenities will probably be designed in accordance with scientific requirements and staffed by specialised veterinary groups to make sure the humane remedy of those animals.
