ST. JOHN’S, NL – Premier John Hogan introduced a $2 million, year-long pilot mission to publicly fund some nurse practitioners. Newfoundland and Labrador is launching a pilot mission to publicly fund some nurse practitioners as unbiased contractors to permit extra individuals to entry major care.

“What it means for the sufferers is that nurse practitioners who take part will not cost them for out of pocket, medically obligatory providers,” mentioned Hogan.

Nurse practitioners who participate within the year-long pilot might be thought of unbiased contractors who present a mixture of same-day and scheduled appointments however can even be tied to household care groups within the provincial well being system.

In an announcement, the province mentioned funding can even cowl entry to digital medical information, together with tools, clinic area, provides and administrative help for 1,950 hours of service per 12 months – together with 1,660 hours of direct affected person care.

Well being minister Krista Lynn Howell mentioned nurse practitioners within the pilot mission will obtain a wage in keeping with what practitioners working inside Newfoundland and Labrador Well being Providers make.

Whereas the pilot mission will value $2 million, the federal government and the affiliation representing these medical professionals says it can enhance entry to major look after individuals with out a household physician.

Howell hopes the pilot can roll out in September, and round 20 of the province’s 351 licensed nurse practitioners are anticipated to participate.

“The position of the nurse practitioner is rising and creating, and we now have a scope of apply right here in Newfoundland and Labrador that’s one of many highest within the nation,” she mentioned.

“We’re hopeful that there might be important uptake, and proper now, we’re within the ballpark of about $2 million for this mission, give or take.”

Registered Nurses’ Union of Newfoundland and Labrador president Yvette Coffey mentioned giving extra individuals entry to major care by way of nurse practitioners can unencumber area in emergency rooms.
