Korean researchers and organisations can now take part within the €52bn Pillar II Horizon Europe programme because the nation turns into an official affiliate.

Negotiations had been accomplished again in September 2024, however yesterday noticed South Korea turn out to be an official affiliate member of Horizon Europe, permitting its researchers and analysis organisations to take part in a number of areas of the programme on equal phrases with these from EU Member States.

The Republic of Korea now formally turn out to be the primary Asian nation to affiliate with Horizon Europe, the EU’s multibillion analysis and innovation programme.

Korean researchers can now be part of and lead worldwide analysis consortia, entry funding and collaborate with main analysis establishments throughout Europe and the Asian nation may even contribute financially to the programme’s funds.

It’s all a part of a drive by Europe to strengthen ties with “like-minded” third nations like Canada and New Zealand, at a time when many of those nations really feel alienated from the US, or worry the rise of their neighbours China.

Within the transition association that kicked in on January 1, 2025,  Korean researchers have already been in a position to apply for grants on an equal footing with EU researchers in Pillar II of the programme, which represents the collaborative half (€52.4bn) of Horizon Europe’s €93.5bn 2021-2027 funds, and is targeted on main international industrial and societal challenges. Entry to the European Analysis Council, which funds bottom-up science, is just not a part of the deal.

In keeping with the EU, the affiliation will result in higher alternatives for deepening joint analysis throughout continents in fields comparable to digital transition, well being, and local weather expertise.

Ekaterina Zaharieva, Commissioner for Startups, Analysis and Innovation welcomed the Republic of Korea to Horizon Europe yesterday.

“The challenges we face at this time, from local weather change to digital transformation, are international in nature,” she stated. “The affiliation brings collectively main minds from Europe and Korea to drive progress and develop options that can profit us all.”

Different pillars, like Glorious Science and Progressive Europe, together with the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions for doctoral training, postdoctoral coaching and collaborative analysis, stay open to Korean organisations and researchers.

It brings the overall variety of related members to Horizon Europe to 19, based mostly on their membership of the European Financial Space (EEA), as acceding, candidate or potential candidate nations, as European Neighbourhood Coverage (ENP) nations, or as “like-minded” third nations just like the UK, New Zealand and Canada.
