This week, we hosted our Summer time Drone Academy, and what a journey it’s been! From unboxing drone kits and constructing them, to seeing them take flight, highschool college students from throughout the area dove headfirst into every week of immersive STEM studying that was stuffed with challenges, creativity, and collaboration.

From Soldering Irons to Takeoff Zones

The week kicked off with a hands-on soldering workshop, the place college students realized tips on how to assemble their very own drones from the bottom up. This foundational work taught them not solely about drone {hardware}, but additionally instilled endurance, precision, and problem-solving abilities.

All through this system, college students related with STEM mentors and business professionals over lunchtime hearth chats, gaining helpful insights into careers in robotics, engineering, and expertise.

Mid-week, contributors entered the build-and-test part, interfacing with their drone’s onboard computer systems through the Linux terminal. This phase of the academy targeted on coding, calibrating, and getting ready for real-world drone flight.  It provided important expertise in programming, navigation, and methods integration.

Flight Day: The Reward for a Week of Laborious Work

The ultimate day was essentially the most rewarding → flight day. College students gathered to look at their drones, constructed with their very own palms, elevate off the bottom. There was no higher reward than watching these machines take flight, a testomony to the scholars’ willpower, teamwork, and newfound technical abilities.

Drone Academy By the Years

Since launching our first pilot in 2019 on the Dearborn STEM Academy, the MassRobotics Drone Academy has continued to develop. With annually, the curriculum has developed alongside the {hardware}, leading to a user-friendly package that empowers college students to take possession of the complete drone-building course of.

  • 2019: First pilot at Dearborn STEM Academy
  • 2020: Curriculum refinement and second academy
  • 2022: Collaboration with Hampton College and Brown College
  • 2023: Introduction of the brand new consumer package and partnerships with Howard College
  • 2024: Enlargement and deepened business participation

Wanting Forward

Drone Academy is greater than only a summer season program — it’s a launchpad for future engineers, roboticists, and innovators. We’re pleased with each pupil who took on this problem and got here out with new abilities, new connections, and a brand new sense of what’s potential.
